Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That
As any significant awards ceremony nears, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the passions of followers with niche passions.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely in 2014
- Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles in the world and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
