Three Americans Killed in Syrian Territory by Suspected Islamic State Gunman, US Defense Department Says
A fatal attack in the heart of Syria on Saturday morning resulted in the deaths of a pair of American troops and a US civilian translator, with several other people wounded, as stated by the US Department of Defense.
This offensive on American forces in the historic city of Palmyra represents the first incident to cause fatalities following the ouster of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad roughly a year ago.
"This assault occurred as the service members were conducting a high-level meeting," an official stated. "The operation was in support of on-going anti-ISIS / anti-terror operations in the area."
The attacker behind the shooting was killed by allied troops, according to a declaration from the US defense secretary.
Specifics Kept Private Out of Respect
US CENTCOM noted that, to respect the privacy for the families and in line with standard procedure, the names of the fallen service members will be withheld until 24 hours after their families have been notified.
Initial accounts from local news agencies and a conflict observatory said that shots erupted during a tour by American troops to the area of Tadmur.
Conflicting Reports Surface
Per a government media outlet, a pair of local security forces and several US service members were wounded in the exchange. The injured were reportedly evacuated by helicopters to a garrison near the frontier with neighboring countries.
A spokesperson for the Syrian government said a shooter affiliated with ISIS began shooting at the entrance of a military post. Authorities are looking into whether the individual was a card-carrying member of the group or merely espoused its radical beliefs.
The official also refuted a report from a UK-based monitoring group that the gunman was a security member.
Ongoing American Deployment in the Region
The US maintains a military presence deployed in eastern Syria as a component of a multinational alliance combating the Islamic State.
Even after being declared defeated in Syria in 2019, the group's dormant networks continue to carry out deadly attacks. UN assessments suggest the faction retains thousands of fighters in Syria and Iraq.
American forces have been attacked in the before. One of the deadliest prior incidents took place in that year in northern Syria, when an blast claimed the lives of two US service members and two American civilians, among additional casualties.
